Day 121 (Sarahthon Day 11): Drawing a Monster

Exclusive Morris interview! (Borrowed from Sarah's Web site)

Today we’re going to speak with the star of the new book, Morris the Mankiest Monster! I’m just walking up to his house, through the mud, and… fwooie! What is that SMELL??! … Oh, hello, Morris!

Sarah: Morris, I don’t mean to be rude or anything, but is your house made of… um… dung?

Morris: Poo! Urrhgh hahahaha…

That’s just lovely. So, what was it like working with a famous guy like Giles? Did he come visit you so he would know what to put in the book?

Urk, snurrfff wooo hee hee hee!…

Ew, what is that COMING OUT OF YOUR NOSE?!!!

Numm……!!!

NO!!! Don’t wipe it there! Oh, noooooooo.

Keekeekeee wurfffff hunnkf!!!

I totally didn’t want to see that. So, Morris, is it true, do you really floss your teeth with fresh slugs?

Grrrrnnn.

Er, those ones don’t even look fresh to me… I think you still have one stuck in your teeth. Yeah, right there, on the left.

Ummm!!!

What? No, that’s all right, you don’t need to thank me! WHAT? You want to give me a KISS?! Aaaaaaahhhh!!!Well, that ended my interview with Morris. I'm sorry, the only word he said that I could understand was ‘poo’, so really, that was probably the worst interview ever.

I don’t think you should buy the book, it might rub off on you or something. Go buy a book about princesses or soap or something nice, so you’ll never have to find out just how disgusting Morris really is.

Day 119 (Sarahthon Day 9): Drawing a Shark in the Bath

Sarah shares the story behind the Story (borrowed from her amazing Web site):
For awhile, my little sister was scared to go in swimming pools because she thought there might be sharks in them. So I thought I’d take that fear and turn it into something we can laugh about. And while visiting schools, I noticed that kids love it when I draw things with BIG TEETH. So this is a book for all of you. And sharks are awesome.
Feel free to tweet pictures of your drawings at me! And kids, I'd love to see your handmade books, too! (I’m @jabberworks.)

Day 114 (Sarahthon Day 3): Drawing Astra from Cakes in Space

Interview with Sarah McIntyre (borrowed from her Web site)

Where did you and Philip Reeve get the idea for Cakes in Space?
Philip was reading my blog and spotted a little painting I’d made on a postcard, of an astronaut and an alien and he thought, Hey, we should try a story with aliens! He’d already seen me draw organic matter – seaweed, fish, beach scenes – for Oliver and the Seawigs, and he thought it would be fun to see how I’d draw machinery and robots. He had the idea of a child wandering around in a spaceship, and then I came up with the idea of a malfunctioning food machine and mutant killer cakes. We sat in cafes and ate quite a lot of cakes together, in the name of research.

How did you create the illustrations?
I first sketched out the pictures in pencil. Then, using my lightbox, I traced over them with a quill dip pen and India ink. I scanned the black lines into my computer, then added the orange and grey colours in Photoshop.

What was one of the most interesting challenges of this book?
Zero gravity! Through most of the book, there’s no up or down, everything floats. Occasionally in the text, we’d forget, and have someone dropping something, or something liquid dripping, and we had to go back and fix those things to reflect the weightless environment. And it’s fun to draw people floating upside down on the page!

Day 112 (Sarahthon Day 1): Drawing Sarah McIntyre

You all know how much I admire Sarah's work, and how much I admire Sarah, not only as an artist and as an author, but also as a person -because she's one of the kindest and most adorable souls I've ever met... So to celebrate book day (just in case you didn't know, here, in Uruguay, we celebrate book day on May 26) I'll be organizing a Sarahthon!

I was surfing around her amazing Web site last week and found tons of marvellous tutorials (I found a few of her video-tutorials on YouTube too), and well... just couldn't resist! For the next few days I'll go on a treasure hunt to find a few more -hope I get to find all of them!-, and every day I'll work on one of her guides, getting to know her characters a bit better, diving into the wonderful worlds she has created.

Remember to visit Sarah's Web site for more fun!
